Tanner Gray shut his laptop and leaned back onto the couch, eyes closed. He’d come so far. From underpaid Marine to criminal mastermind. He understood how it might look to some, including his mother, but he’d found himself in that first simple transaction. A mechanic who was working on his HUMVEE in Afghanistan had mentioned in passing a nearby poppy plantation. When Tanner pressed him on it, the mechanic, who’d been busted down to PFC twice in his three-year career, shut his mouth.

Sgt. Gray had waited two nights to pay the Marine a visit. When he did, threatening to go to command with the charges if he didn’t fess up, the PFC spilled the plan. He’d come into possession of three bags of heroin and was planning on shipping them back to his girlfriend in Arizona. He even admitted to repeated shipments earlier in their deployment. To Tanner’s surprise, the Marine had never been caught.

Tanner had convinced the Marine to relinquish the drugs, which were vacuum-sealed and waiting in a manila envelope addressed to the girlfriend. In exchange, and as long as the Marine kept in line, Tanner promised not to turn him in. When the Marine asked Tanner what he was going to do with the drugs, Tanner said he was going to throw them in the burn buckets.

He’d left the relieved Marine and spent the night thinking about the package of drugs now stashed in his foot locker. Never in his life had Tanner considered getting into the drug business. But life in the Corps was getting old. He’d signed up thinking he’d become some kind of hero, like the guys he saw in the recruiting videos. Hook, line, and sinker was how he’d gone off to boot camp. Now things were different. He was a sergeant and he had some autonomy among the rest of the enlisted men of the battalion. The Staff NCOs and officers didn’t bother him because they knew him as a reliable and squeaky-clean Marine. And up to that time he had been.

As he lay in his cot that night, dreaming of life back home, he started to wonder if his time in the Corps would be better spent in different pursuits. He decided to sleep on it.

When he woke up the next morning, his mind was made up. His first stop was the international phone booth, where there was already a line to call home. Too anxious to wait, he pulled rank in front of a group of lance corporals, promising to keep the call short.

That first call went to an old friend who was still living in Yakima, Washington. He told his buddy to expect a package, but that he shouldn’t open it, that it was a present for his mom. The guy was cool about it and promised to keep it until Tanner’s return.

After getting back to the States, Tanner took a couple of days leave and visited his mother. Before he went to her house, he stopped at his buddy’s home with a bottle of Jim Beam in tow as a little “Thank You” gift.
